Video Game Quotes: Pokemon on Life

mewtwo pokemon quote motivational life lessons

I see now that the circumstances of one’s birth are irrelevant. It is what you do with the gift of life that determines who you are.

– MewTwo, Pokemon

For many, it is easy to focus on all the disadvantages we face, many times overlooking all the opportunity that can be found if we persist. This quote from MewTwo during the Pokemon Movie represents a wide range of stories that can be found in movies, video games, and real life examples.

I love how Jon Acuff compares life to a race when you are pursuing your dreams. We all have a race to run, and while we don’t get to choose the finish line, we can all choose when we start.

This analogy feels personally relevant since I am preparing to run a 5k race in a few months. It’s up to me to train, to get up early, to do the hard work, so that when the day of the race arrives, I will be ready. If I don’t prepare well, I cannot expect great results. It does not matter what limitations I might have, what I do with the time between now and the day of the event is what matters. I can choose to focus on what I can control, and make progress from what I was able to do yesterday.

It’s up to me. It’s my choice.

The same is true for all of us.

Video Game Quotes: Uncharted 3 on Opportunities

uncharted quote sully victor sullivan video game life lessons leadership personal development self help

We don’t get to choose how we start in the life. Real ‘greatness’ is what you do with the hand you’re dealt.

– Victor Sullivan aka Sully, Uncharted 3

Disbelief. Skepticism.

Those are the typical responses I find when I make the point that video games teach personal accountability. To be honest, I did not really understand this until I learned about John G. Miller, and his QBQ! Question Behind the Question (Listen to my interview with him HERE).

This quote from Sully in Uncharted 3 captures the basis for just about every video game and how personal accountability fits in.

Video games often involve the hero of the story starting out with nothing, at level one; or if you do have items or skills, they are selected by the game designer. In some cases, like Castlevania: SOTN or Metroid Prime, you start out with power ups, only to quickly lose them.

At this point you could give up, sell the game, throw your controller across the room, and swear off video games all together.

But that’s not what we do. We play on. We overcome. We grow and fight to become stronger.

Guess what? The same approach works in your own life.

Sure, others may have it better than you. But if you are reading this on a computer or a smart phone, you are doing a lot better than a million other people in the world today.

What matters most is what you do next. So what will it be? How will you play the hand you have been dealt?

Video Game Quotes: Legend of Zelda on Being a Hero

life lessons from video games zelda quotes motivational

As I thought, you have the power of the Hero inside you.

– Princess Zelda

Being the hero is something we all get a chance to do when we play video games. In life, we do not always feel so heroic. But it does not have to be that way. Being a hero is about mindset, beliefs, behaviors, and actions.

Being a hero is not something that you must wait for, complete a degree to obtain, or have a certain type of job to receive. Being a hero is something we all can do. It’s not always glamorous, and it seldom receives the attention it should, but we can all be a hero to someone else.

The thing about true heroes, is they are selfless. There are a lot of things that you can do to be a hero, but ultimately, you must do something for someone else.

Speak up. Stand up.

Take action. Stand firm.

Being a hero is not easy and it probably will be uncomfortable. It can also be lonely at times. But in the end, it is worth it for the difference you will make in the world around you and in the lives of others.

Who will you be a hero for today?

Video Game Quotes: Final Fantasy VII on Strength

video game quote final fantasy vii 7 strength godo life leadership

Strength without determination means nothing…and determination without strength is equally useless.

– Godo Kisaragi (Yuffie’s Father), Final Fantasy VII

What have you quit? Where have you given up? Did you allow your dreams to die, or did others choke them?

Often, those who win (at life, in video games) simply keep trying longer than others who quit. Failure is only final when give up.

Video Game Quotes: Donkey Kong Country on Change

Donkey Kong Country quote life lesson video games leadership

Back in my day, we used to have REAL gameplay… We didn’t have any of this fancy 3D stuff!

– Cranky Kong

Dealing with change can be difficult. We prefer what is familiar over what is comfortable. and we prefer what is comfortable over what is better.

It is natural to resist change, especially if you do not understand why the change is happening or if the future seems uncertain.

But change is the new normal.

How will you deal with change as a leader, employee, spouse, or parent? When others are involved, our response to change has a ripple effect. As a leader, we can hold back an entire organization. As an employee, we can derail important initiatives at our organization, as a spouse we can frustrate and alienate our spouse, and as a parent we can exasperate our children.

Change is hard.

But it is required if we ever want to grow or become better.

You don’t become better at anything by staying the same.

Change management is one of the skills that video games teach us. Find out more in Mastering The Game: What Video Games Can Teach Us About Success In Life.

Words aren’t the only way to tell someone how you feel.

Video Game Quotes: Rambo On Taking Action

video games quotes motivational inspirational rambo nes

“But it’s up to you. The game doesn’t start until you say yes.”

– Colonel Trautman, Rambo (NES)

Ok, Rambo on the NES is a pretty terrible game. But this quote is just awesome. Life requires us to make a move before things happen. We often cannot control when things end, but we can have a say as to when the begin.

Sure there are times when we are forced to wait (here’s a few things you can do while stuck on life’s loading screens), but we are still accountable for taking action.

The Mindfluence Revolution Podcast mentions the idea that “Action ends dissatisfaction,” and when we take steps to pursue our dreams, we find that we are much happier – even in the face of challenge.

Personally, being stuck or stagnant is the worse state to be in.

So what are you waiting for? Get started today.

The game doesn’t start until you say yes.
