Video Game Quotes: Pokemon on Life

mewtwo pokemon quote motivational life lessons

I see now that the circumstances of one’s birth are irrelevant. It is what you do with the gift of life that determines who you are.

– MewTwo, Pokemon

For many, it is easy to focus on all the disadvantages we face, many times overlooking all the opportunity that can be found if we persist. This quote from MewTwo during the Pokemon Movie represents a wide range of stories that can be found in movies, video games, and real life examples.

I love how Jon Acuff compares life to a race when you are pursuing your dreams. We all have a race to run, and while we don’t get to choose the finish line, we can all choose when we start.

This analogy feels personally relevant since I am preparing to run a 5k race in a few months. It’s up to me to train, to get up early, to do the hard work, so that when the day of the race arrives, I will be ready. If I don’t prepare well, I cannot expect great results. It does not matter what limitations I might have, what I do with the time between now and the day of the event is what matters. I can choose to focus on what I can control, and make progress from what I was able to do yesterday.

It’s up to me. It’s my choice.

The same is true for all of us.

Video Game Quotes: Final Fantasy IX

final fantasy ix amarant quote

Blind pursuit of power is a meaningless vice

– Amarant, Final Fantasy IX

It can be easy to focus on your goal, only to miss the point of why you are pursuing the goal to begin with. The word “power” in this quote could easily be substituted for “money,” “fame,” “prestige,” or even “knowledge.” Yes, it is important to be focused, but intention is essential to achieving the results you want.

If the reason why you are striving for something is forgotten, then it is time to stop and take a look at what you really want to accomplish. Don’t let yourself fall into a routine, mindlessly trudging forward, without asking yourself “is this what I really want?”

Getting Back On Track

So what do you do if you find yourself heading down the wrong path? Should you keep going, or speed up? All too often, we choose responses that only make our situation worse.

C.S. Lewis said this: “If you are on the wrong road, progress means doing an about-turn and walking back to the right road, and in that case the man who turns back soonest is the most progressive man.”

Now, it takes a fair amount of humility to admit you are wrong, and even more humility to make a change, but your progress in life may very well depend on it.

If you catch yourself heading aimlessly in life, take a moment to stop and find yourself again and then get clear on your purpose. I know how frustrating it can be when you want to see results from all your hard work, but without focus and direction, hard work is meaningless.

Video Game Quotes: Uncharted 3 on Opportunities

uncharted quote sully victor sullivan video game life lessons leadership personal development self help

We don’t get to choose how we start in the life. Real ‘greatness’ is what you do with the hand you’re dealt.

– Victor Sullivan aka Sully, Uncharted 3

Disbelief. Skepticism.

Those are the typical responses I find when I make the point that video games teach personal accountability. To be honest, I did not really understand this until I learned about John G. Miller, and his QBQ! Question Behind the Question (Listen to my interview with him HERE).

This quote from Sully in Uncharted 3 captures the basis for just about every video game and how personal accountability fits in.

Video games often involve the hero of the story starting out with nothing, at level one; or if you do have items or skills, they are selected by the game designer. In some cases, like Castlevania: SOTN or Metroid Prime, you start out with power ups, only to quickly lose them.

At this point you could give up, sell the game, throw your controller across the room, and swear off video games all together.

But that’s not what we do. We play on. We overcome. We grow and fight to become stronger.

Guess what? The same approach works in your own life.

Sure, others may have it better than you. But if you are reading this on a computer or a smart phone, you are doing a lot better than a million other people in the world today.

What matters most is what you do next. So what will it be? How will you play the hand you have been dealt?

Video Game Quotes Final Fantasy VI On Hope

video game quotes final fantasy vi Edgar

First things first. For once I feel hopeful!

– Edgar Roni Figaro, Final Fantasy VI

Final Fantasy VI is one of my all time favorite video games. The story, the music, the game play, and all of the characters – everything about this game is outstanding.

The story follows quite a dramatic arc, filled with fun and adventure, but some very terrible things happen in the course of the game. Tales of love that was lost, depression, powerlessness, separation, and even the near destruction of the world.

But at it’s heart, Final Fantasy VI is about hope. About finding meaning in the face of extreme adversity. About finding your purpose and living life with intention.

Maybe you are feeling a bit lost or hopeless. Edgar’s quote gives us a hint for how to get back on track:

First things first.

When life feels overwhelming or we have a hard time finding hope, focus on what you can do, right in front of you. Make sure you eat well, sleep well, and spend time with those you love.

Don’t worry about every detail, but focus on the one thing you can do right now to make your situation a little better. Take action each day, even if what you can do seems small or insignificant, it adds up.

Seeing results will give you hope. But even if you cannot see results right away, don’t give up. If video games can teach us anything, it’s the ability to persist in the face of challenge – and overcome.

You got this.

Video Game Quotes: Donkey Kong Country on Change

Donkey Kong Country quote life lesson video games leadership

Back in my day, we used to have REAL gameplay… We didn’t have any of this fancy 3D stuff!

– Cranky Kong

Dealing with change can be difficult. We prefer what is familiar over what is comfortable. and we prefer what is comfortable over what is better.

It is natural to resist change, especially if you do not understand why the change is happening or if the future seems uncertain.

But change is the new normal.

How will you deal with change as a leader, employee, spouse, or parent? When others are involved, our response to change has a ripple effect. As a leader, we can hold back an entire organization. As an employee, we can derail important initiatives at our organization, as a spouse we can frustrate and alienate our spouse, and as a parent we can exasperate our children.

Change is hard.

But it is required if we ever want to grow or become better.

You don’t become better at anything by staying the same.

Change management is one of the skills that video games teach us. Find out more in Mastering The Game: What Video Games Can Teach Us About Success In Life.

Video Game Quotes: Popful Mail on Time

popful mail video game quotes leadership life lesson

I’ve got all the time in the world…

– Popful Mail

Time is funny – it spends itself, regardless if you plan to use it or not. So how are you using your time?

Are you always in a hurry, or do you have a sense of ease?

When is the last time that you thought to yourself “I have all the time in the world?”

I personally can’t remember thinking a thought along those lines in over five years.

Maybe more.

Then again, maybe you are waiting. Feeling stuck. If that is you, then here is what you can do in the meantime.

Video Game Quotes: Assassin’s Creed

assasssins creed quotes life leadership truth video games

Educate them. Teach them right from wrong. It must be knowledge that frees them, not force.

Altair, Assassin’s Creed

You know that saying “You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make them drink?”

Just today I was listening to an episode of Dan Pink’s Podcast, where he interview the Heath brothers about their book Decisive: How to Make Better Choices in Life and Work.

During this interview, the idea came up that many individuals will resist choices being made for them, but they are less likely to resist being given a process to make a choice.

Knowledge is power. It takes away vulnerability.

It does not matter if you are buying a car, having an operation performed, or launching a business venture – vulnerability can skew your decision making. Vulnerability most feels like fear.

That’s why we research big choices. It’s why we read how many 5 Star (or 1 Star) reviews a product has on Amazon before we buy.

It’s why we don’t get married on our first date.

Of course, knowing right from wrong does not mean we will always make a good choice, but it sure helps to be informed.

Video Game Quotes: Final Fantasy X On Love

final fantasy x quote tidus yuna

Stay with me until the end.

Not until the end, always.

Always then.

Tidus & Yuna, Final Fantasy X

Yup. I’m a bit of a sappy romantic. I’ll admit it, I have cried more than once while playing video games. Final Fantasy VII started it, but Final Fantasy VIII and Final Fantasy X really did it for me. The music, the story, and the atmosphere all work together in an amazing way. But I don’t want to say much more about games today, I want to talk about my wife of 12 years.

It’s hard to believe that it has already been 12 years. Then again, it is hard to remember a time before her and I were together.

In video games, “escort missions” are the worst. You usually play as a hero who is loaded up with weapons, tasked with defending a helpless computer-controlled NPC (Non-Playable Character). The AI is typically pretty bad, with the character you are responsible for protecting running right into trouble.

Just to be clear, my marriage has been nothing like that. My wife is one of the strongest women I know. I am so proud of her and her hard work as a wife, mother, student, and employee.

She’s pretty incredible.

I love you babe.
